(2) (Man) Yeah, what you got?
(3) (Tony) An ET 35 Raw Turbo kit. Mishimoto intercooler.
(4) Uh huh.
(5) Engine SCS exhaust.
(6) Oh, what?
(7) That's how I roll.
(8) (Man) Oh, check it out, it's the SX Race Car.
(9) Our boy's gone legit, sponsored ride and everything.
(10) What's next, Kruger?
(11) (Danny) I want to be the first import racer in top fuel.
(12) Yeah.
(13) I better get your autograph now, so I can sell it
(14) on eBay when you blow up.
(15) (Mike) Come on, Danny, you know you can't be here in this.
(16) Relax, Mikey, I'm just here to visit, no harm in that.
(17) If EFX finds out you're just visiting, your ass is done,
(18) they'll kick you off.
(19) (Tony) Ahhh. Look who showed up,
(20) you going to pay your respects to the King?
(21) Tony, if I beat you again, you'd have to file assault charges.
(22) (All) Oh, ho, ho.
(23) Nobody can touch my new set up, Kruger.
(24) And, you ain't top dog no more.
(25) Don't listen to him, you know he's baiting you.
(26) I'll tell you what, I'll come back with my slow car,
(27) and make it fair.
(28) (All) Ohhhh.
(29) You know what, I don't care what you're driving,
(30) step up or shut up.
(31) (All) Ohhhh.
(32) Not tonight.
(33) Yeah, forget it.
(34) Oh, so, so what, you just coming to show off?
(35) You go ahead, standing like a pansy and posing next to that...
(36) show car.
(37) You can like say what you want about me, Kruger,
(38) when I come to the ring, I'm ready to box.
(39) (man) Right.
(40) (All) Ohhhh.
(41) Okay, come on.
(42) Yeah, ohhhh.
(43) Let's do it.
(44) Walk away.
(45) I'm not going to let this punk make me look bad.
(46) Who cares what these people think.
(47) They just want to see a race.
(48) (Police radio) Attention all units, downtown.
(49) Got a possible 10-19 in progress at Spencer.
(50) Dude, I just heard it on the scanner, it's been called in.
(51) Flag us.
(52) I'm not doing it, this is stupid, I'm telling you.
(53) Just do it. It'll be over in ten seconds.
(54) (sirens)
(55) (crash)
(56) (Police) You all right?
(57) (Danny) Yeah.
(58) Good. Put your hands up, you're under arrest.
(59) Spread your legs.
(60) (Mom) I only agreed to let you race for them, because
(61) I thought it would keep you out of trouble. That you would
(62) finally be doing something productive. I have had it.
(63) (Joe) Oh boy.
(64) How bad this time?
(65) Dude, l, I don't think we should do this, man.
(66) Mr. Afshaw, I am so sorry.
(67) If you could let me explain, l...
(68) (Afshaw) What part do you want to explain?
(69) The part where you took a hundred thousand Dollar
(70) car to an illegal street race, or how you managed
(71) to crash it into a cop car? You're lucky nobody got hurt.
(72) I know. I made a mistake, but...
(73) What you did was stupid. This is a disaster.
(74) You're done, Kruger.
(75) I'll, I'll pay for it.
(76) You're done.
(77) Come on, Danny, let's go. Sorry, Mr. Afshaw.
(78) Ohhh, I should have listened to you.
(79) Dude, you're like a bull, you see red, you just go for it.
(80) It doesn't matter what anyone says.
(81) Yeah.
(82) Keep your head up, man. You'll be all right.
(83) What?
(84) We're trying to help you, we are...
(85) it's, it's just, ah...
(86) We're sending you to live with your father.
(87) What?
(88) You need to make a clean break, put all of this behind you.
(89) When did you talk to him?
(90) This morning.
(91) He put you up to this, didn't he?
(92) No, Joe has nothing to do with this.
(93) Every time there's a problem, it is worst than the last time.
(94) Speeding tickets, street racing, and now another accident, l
(95) don't even want to think about what is going to happen next.
(96) You're going to send me to go live with a guy
(97) that I haven't seen in five years? He's a drunk.
(98) No, Danny, he is not a drunk.
(99) Oh, not any more.
(100) I have done everything I can think of and l
(101) don't know what else to do.
(102) I'm not going.
(103) My whole life is here, there's no way...
(104) No, you don't have a choice in the matter.
(105) You are going, end of story.
(106) (shattering)
(107) (Frank) Hey Liz.
(108) Hi, Frank.
(109) You look good.
(110) Umh, you too.
(111) (garage door)
(112) Hey kid.
(113) Hey, Frank.
(114) So, you want to get loaded up or what?
(115) It's ahh, nice ride you got back there.
(116) What is it, ah, 2003, right?
(117) Four.
(118) Modify it yourself?
(119) Me and my buddy, Mikey.
(120) Nice.
(121) Looks expensive.
(122) A heck of a guy that stepfather of yours.
(123) I bought it myself.
(124) Can we keep the small talk to a minimum?
(125) Ahhh, so that's your plan.
(126) Ignore me.
(127) Until I turn eighteen, pretty much.
(128) Umh.
(129) Why wait, tough guy, go on.
(130) Get out!
(131) Take a walk.
(132) Go ahead and hate me all you want, it won't
(133) change the fact that we're stuck with each other.
(134) Do you understand?
(135) Oh, I'm not going to win a popularity contest,
(136) or be your best friend, or make up for lost time.
(137) I'm here because your mother couldn't handle you anymore,
(138) you get that? You get it?
(139) I owe her.
(140) Yeah?
(141) What about me?
(142) What about you?
(143) So this is home.
(144) (Danny) You still have that thing?
(145) Yep.
(146) I bet it runs like crap.
(147) All right.
(148) My humble abode.
(149) So, now that you're living with me, there's a few rules that
(150) you're going to follow. There's no maid service,
(151) so pick up after yourself. You make your own meals,
(152) you do your dishes, laundry is over there.
(153) Your room.
(154) Any questions?
(155) Could we unload my car now?
(156) What's your hurry, you can't drive it.
(157) My license is restricted, I can drive to work and school.
(158) Uh huh?
(159) And, nowhere else, right?
(160) Right. Get unpacked.
(161) I got it from here.
(162) What's it need?
(163) Just finishing a turbo upgrade. It's no big deal.
(164) So, you think you know your way around an engine?
(165) Probably better than you.
(166) Fantastic, I always wanted a second mechanic,
(167) but I couldn't afford it. You're going to put those expert skills
(168) of yours to work, every day, after school. No free rides.
(169) (alarm clock)
(170) Ahhh.
(171) Crap.
(172) (Max) Okay, check the fuel maps. The air fuel ratio
(173) gets anywhere near 11.5 to one, we lean it out.
(174) (Harry) This ain't cool, man. We should run it rich.
(175) Dude, I wanted 12.5 to one.
(176) All right, fine. Pistons crack, it's on you, my friend.
(177) (Max) Whatever.
(178) Check the EGTs, too.
(179) Yes, master.
(180) (Jake) Watch this, baby.
(181) What's up, Max. How's the rice burner running?
(182) Pretty sweet. Worked on it all summer.
(183) Cool.
(184) Want to see if the hard work paid off?
(185) (Harry) Hell, yeah.
(186) It's so much faster with the turbo.
(187) Show them what we got.
(188) (revving)
(189) (Jessica) Can we not do this, please?
(190) Jake, don't.
(191) Jake, pull over.
(192) All right, we got it.
(193) Jake!
(194) Keep it up.
(195) Ahhh, Jake!
(196) You're such a jerk.
(197) Come on.
(198) Come on.
(199) Shake and bake, baby.
(200) What the hell is wrong with you, they could have been hurt!
(201) What, they're fine.
(202) Come on, you still mad?
(203) Pretty sick prize, right?
(204) Yeah.
(205) Best racing school there is.
(206) All the top racing teams scout for new drivers there.
(207) Well, you better have a fast ride if you're going to enter?
(208) I got that covered.
(209) You look familiar. What do I know you from?
(210) You don't.
(211) Oh, oh, boys, another hopeful.
(212) It's cruel to have them posters up there like that,
(213) make these fools think they have a chance.
(214) Hey Max, close race this morning.
(215) (school bell)
(216) I'm Mr. Briggs.
(217) I'm going to tell you candy asses right now, this is not
(218) some fluff elective you'll be able to jerk your way through.
(219) I run a very serious shop class.
(220) Jake...
(221) I'm talking to you.
(222) Me?
(223) You.
(224) I don't care who you think you are, when you're in my class,
(225) you will pay attention, and you will participate.
(226) Do you understand?
(227) Yes, Sir.
(228) All right, well since you're in such a good mood,
(229) Jake, why don't you tell the class what
(230) Cam torque actuated variable cam timing is?
(231) Ahhh, what was that again?
(232) (sniggering)
(233) You...
(234) explain.
(235) Ahh, well, it varies intake valve timing by using tortional
(236) energy to rotate the camshaft.
(237) Well, I don't keep up the import tuner magazine.
(238) (sniggering)
(239) Actually, CTA variable timing is used in domestic cars
(240) Iike the new Mustang. Don't you drive one of those?
(241) (Briggs) Not bad. What's your name?
(242) Danny.
(243) You got a last name, Danny?
(244) Kruger.
(245) You're Frank's kid? He said you'd show up.
(246) He also said you got a piss poor attendance record,
(247) I'm not going to have a problem with you, am l, Danny?
(248) No.
(249) Good.
(250) Wait, you're dad's Frank Kruger?
(251) One more reason you shouldn't set foot on a track.
(252) (school bell)
(253) How do I sign up for the drags?
(254) You eighteen yet?
(255) No.
(256) Have your dad sign it, get it back to me,
(257) deadline's in two weeks.
(258) Danny...
(259) ignore them.
(260) Your dad was one hell of a racer.
(261) (school bell)
(262) (Parker) Okay, now for all the new faces out there,
(263) I'd like to welcome you to Drama Class.
(264) I am Miss Parker. And, I like to start each new
(265) class with an exercise that I call 'First lmpressions'.
(266) So, which one of you is going to go first?
(267) Uh huh, uh huh. Okay, you in the back.
(268) Yeah. What is your name, Sir?
(269) Danny.
(270) Danny? Will you stand right here?
(271) Ah, and who would like to give us their
(272) first impression of Danny?
(273) Jessica.
(274) You seem like you have a lot to say today.
(275) Why don't you tell me what you see?
(276) He's definitely a transfer student.
(277) Okay, interesting. Continue.
(278) He is probably in Drama because it's the
(279) only elective still open.
(280) And, why do you say that?
(281) He doesn't look like the kind of guy who reads Shakespeare.
(282) (huffs) Neither do you, Miss Popularity,
(283) in your four hundred dollar jeans.
(284) Name one character in any of his plays.
(285) I can name two, Romeo and Juliet.
(286) Please, even a fifth grader knows that.
(287) You said any character. Your turn.
(288) Oh, this is really difficult, I mean there are so many
(289) great ones. MacBeth, Shylock, Desdemona, Othello, Hamlet.
(290) Your turn.
(291) Are those are all the characters?
(292) (laughs)
(293) You did good.
(294) Puck.
(295) Excuse me?
(296) Puck, from A Midsummer's Night Dream.
(297) The Mischief Maker, the Merry Wanderer of the Night.
(298) Somebody Googled Shakespeare after class.
(299) So ah, how could you tell that I got stuck with Drama?
(300) The same thing happened to me when I transferred.
(301) Oh, you transferred, too, huh? When?
(302) Last year, from Tampa. What about you?
(303) Encino.
(304) A Valley boy, huh?
(305) Yeah.
(306) Is Bradford like a major culture shock?
(307) This place sucks.
(308) (laughs)
(309) It'll get better.
(310) I hope so.
(311) I'm having a back to school party tonight.
(312) You should come.
(313) Uh, yeah, I don't know.
(314) Not into the whole people thing?
(315) Here is the address...
(316) in case you get bored.
(317) You're late.
(318) I got three cars that needed tune-ups fifteen minutes ago.
(319) (engine does not start)
(320) Pick it up, you got two more after that one.
(321) I'm not used to working on antiques.
(322) Antiques?
(323) Do you even know how to set points?
(324) What I know is programmable engine management systems,
(325) not carburetors and mechanical ignition.
(326) Try using a feeler gauge, that'll help you out.
(327) Where the hell do you keep the stupid thing?
(328) I don't know, I never need it.
(329) (engine starts)
(330) Write it up.
(331) (knocking)
(332) Heading to the diner for something to eat,
(333) do you want to join?
(334) I already ate.
(335) Suit yourself.
(336) (engine starts)
(337) (Max) Hey, Danny, Danny.
(338) Now I know where I seen you before.
(339) Hey, put that away man, that's ancient history.
(340) History is our favorite subject.
(341) I'm Max, this is Harry.
(342) So, what's a rock star like you doing in Bradford?
(343) You two know the girl who is throwing this party?
(344) Kind of. Definitely.
(345) You're cool with us tagging along, right?
(346) I guess.
(347) (Max) Whoa, there's a pool.
(348) Should have done crunches.
(349) Dude, let's go get some brewskis. Want one?
(350) I'm good.
(351) All right.
(352) (Rachel) lmpressive turn out, Jessica, I'm must say.
(353) Where's Jake?
(354) Come on, Rachel. We went on two of the worst dates.
(355) I'm officially done.
(356) Yeah but look at what he's done for your social life.
(357) This party, it's strictly A list.
(358) Oh my God, it's that kid from Drama Class.
(359) The Bruder...?
(360) So?
(361) What, you invited him?
(362) Thought it'd be a good opportunity
(363) for him to meet people.
(364) Well, he's off to a great start, hanging out with the
(365) Tech support over there. Did, did you invite them, too?
(366) They're not hurting anybody.
(367) (scoffs)
(368) (Max) Andrew's here.
(369) Pete, the shorts?
(370) You seen him.
(371) Hey.
(372) Hey yourself. I didn't think you'd show.
(373) Since the host gave me a VlP invite, I thought
(374) I'd skip work and make an appearance.
(375) And she appreciates that.
(376) Very good, cause my boss is a real hard ass.
(377) (Briggs) So what happened, you're out and about
(378) and not holed up in that damned shop of yours.
(379) (Frank) It's like old times.
(380) (Kendall) Frank Kruger, is that you?
(381) I hardly recognize you standing upright and all,
(382) you know they don't serve Wild Turkey here.
(383) Been sober a year this October, Jimmy.
(384) Ohhh.
(385) Add another car to your collection?
(386) What are you talking about, the same one I've always had.
(387) Now I recognize it,
(388) I only ever saw the headlights in the rearview.
(389) (Briggs) Ohhhh.
(390) You're a funny man.
(391) Hey, what up baby, how's it going?
(392) Your parents aren't gonna scoop in and break this up any time?
(393) Are you kidding?
(394) Throwing a party like this, is my stepdad's idea of bonding.
(395) Oh, mine couldn't wait to get rid of me.
(396) You see Jessica anywhere?
(397) Hey that Kruger kid gets around, doesn't he?
(398) Is that how you ended up in Bradford?
(399) Something like that. My dad lives here.
(400) Why, I have no idea.
(401) Come on, it's not that bad, is it?
(402) It's getting better.
(403) Jake.
(404) What are you doing with this boy?
(405) We're talking.
(406) That's all you better be doing.
(407) Don't act like my boyfriend, Jake, cause you're not.
(408) Look, I know we had a little fight, that's cause
(409) we're still getting to know each other.
(410) Oh, really? How?
(411) The only thing you talk about is you, and your car.
(412) (laughs)
(413) What's wrong with that?
(414) (laughs)
(415) Bitches, right, they never know what they want.
(416) All right, all right, no need to get nasty.
(417) You going to do something about it?
(418) Relax, okay? Nobody wants a problem.
(419) Too late.
(420) (punch)
(421) Oh my God.
(422) You want a little bit more,
(423) you think he needs a little bit more?
(424) Yeah, he's gonna get a little bit more.
(425) Stop.
(426) How that one feel, huh?
(427) Huh, you like that, huh?
(428) Is that all you got?
(429) You want some of this?
(430) Ahhhh.
(431) (Jessica) Oh my God. Somebody stop this!
(432) Danny, stop!
(433) He's like a super hero!
(434) Get up. Get him!
(435) (Jessica) Jake, don't!
(436) He's dead.
(437) Get him.
(438) Come on.
(439) (car horns)
(440) And that's where we got a straightaway, boys.
(441) Come on!
(442) Why aren't we catching him?
(443) 'Cause I got you two idiots in the car.
(444) No cops, no cops, no cops.
(445) (Briggs) I'm impressed, Frank.
(446) You finally getting that temper under control.
(447) It ain't easy with that kid testing it every other day.
(448) He's as bad as I was.
(449) You were worse and you know it.
(450) (laughs) Yeah.
(451) He seems like a good kid, just give him some time.
(452) I just hope I can keep him out of trouble, you know.
(453) (fast cars)
(454) You're doing a hell of a job so far.
(455) God!
(456) Move.
(457) Pull over, Kruger, we just want to talk.
(458) Go, go!
(459) Ahh, come on!
(460) We got him.
(461) There we go, rice burner.
(462) Pull over, Kruger!
(463) Come on.
(464) Got him, boys.
(465) (truck horn)
(466) (squealing tires)
(467) (panting) Oh, he's a dead man.
(468) (engine dies)
(469) Come on.
(470) Yeah.
(471) Ahhh.
(472) You better hit the road or you're going to be late.
(473) My car's got problems, can I have a ride?
(474) Ah, driving it too hard?
(475) I'll find my own ride home.
(476) Hey man, is it true you dusted Jake's Mustang?
(477) Bro.
(478) What do you got under your hood?
(479) (guy) Dude, I don't know, I think he's gonna...
(480) No dude, there's no way he's gonna show up...
(481) (room falls silent)
(482) Kruger, you might want to sit right there.
(483) All right, let's start off with a little pop
(484) quiz on air fuel ratios.
(485) Dude, you outran Jake.
(486) That's what everybody at the diner was saying.
(487) He had two people in his car so I had the advantage,
(488) but yeah, I did all right, why?
(489) Dude, he's the fastest in the County,
(490) nobody can touch him at the street races.
(491) His dad owns Kendall Performance,
(492) he's got like a whole store at his disposal.
(493) Great.
(494) Jake's cars will put this school on the map.
(495) Our football team sucks.
(496) You're into drags, right?
(497) Yeah, just got to finish some work on my car first.
(498) You don't know what you started.
(499) (Briggs) Hey, hey, hey, knock it off. There'll be
(500) no fighting in my classroom, not if you want to
(501) compete in this year's drags. Now, you got
(502) a problem with each other, you settle it on the track.
(503) And, keep your racing off the streets.
(504) I'll see you outside school.
(505) (school bell) See you after school?
(506) Yeah, I'll catch you later.
(507) Danny.
(508) Hey.
(509) Hey.
(510) How's the lip?
(511) It's fine.
(512) How does it feel to be the most talked about guy at school?
(513) Huh, I liked it better when nobody knew my name.
(514) Thank you.
(515) Yeah well, I didn't like the way he was talking to you.
(516) It was very Puck like.
(517) That's a good thing, right?
(518) Yes.
(519) Go on a date with me.
(520) I might consider that.
(521) But, my car's out of commission,
(522) so you're going to have to drive, too.
(523) The car everyone's dreaming about?
(524) Yeah, don't tell anybody.
(525) It's at the end of the month.
(526) You're kidding me, right?
(527) The grand prize is a full ride to the
(528) NHRA Pomona Racing School, it's where everybody...
(529) Yeah, yeah.
(530) I think you should stay away from racing for a while.
(531) I should have known that you would be a jerk about this.
(532) Watch your mouth.
(533) Especially when you're asking me for favors.
(534) I haven't asked you for anything in seven years.
(535) All I want is your signature.
(536) You want my signature?
(537) I better not catch you street racing again.
(538) I haven't been.
(539) Who do you think you're talking to?
(540) (engine starts)
(541) (engine does not start)
(542) No way.
(543) You're not the only one around here with a fast car.
(544) And it's stick, too.
(545) What's the point of having a Porche that's an automatic?
(546) You know, you're making it really hard for
(547) me to like you right now.
(548) Oh. Buckle up.
(549) So, where we going?
(550) Chuckie Cheese.
(551) Chuckie Cheese? That's fun.
(552) You ever been there before?
(553) No.
(554) So, who taught you how to drive? You're good.
(555) Unlike most girls?
(556) Hey, you said that, not me.
(557) It was the car l learned to drive in.
(558) Mine was an old Honda Civic.
(559) It was my dad's.
(560) The day he brought it home, he was like a little kid.
(561) He had been saving up for years to buy it.
(562) My mom was so mad.
(563) She called it his convertible midlife crisis.
(564) I still remember the feel of the leather when it was new,
(565) and the smell.
(566) He used to say Porche leather had a unique scent to it.
(567) And, I don't want that to fade so I only drive it on special
(568) occasions, or... when I have a lot on my mind.
(569) How long has he been gone for?
(570) Three years.
(571) I'm sorry.
(572) Why?
(573) So, I heard a rumor your dad raced in Nascar.
(574) Until he hit a wall at 150 and shattered his clutch leg.
(575) Ouch.
(576) Yeah.
(577) He wasn't the same after that. It was like living with a ghost.
(578) You knew he was there but,
(579) he only made himself visible when he felt like it.
(580) But, you're closer now, right?
(581) Sure, from a geographical standpoint.
(582) But ah, I don't know, it's weird.
(583) What is?
(584) Trying to communicate.
(585) He's, it's like it's just too much to say.
(586) That's not a bad problem to have, trust me.
(587) Do you want to go for a drive?
(588) Yeah.
(589) Okay.
(590) Good night.
(591) Nite.
(592) What's up?
(593) Think you could take a look at my car?
(594) Maybe this weekend, I got to get this head gasket replaced, asap.
(595) Forget it.
(596) I'll figure it out myself.
(597) What's the problem?
(598) It's getting fuel, it's getting spark, the timing
(599) beIt's not broken, vacuum lines are all good. I don't get it.
(600) Normally, I'd run a diagnostic with Mikey's laptop,
(601) but obviously I can't do that.
(602) Try it now.
(603) Start the damned thing already.
(604) (engine starts)
(605) You forgot to torque down the crank sensor.
(606) That's why it was running rough before.
(607) And those poly mounts you got probably helped shake it loose.
(608) I didn't even think to check that.
(609) Uh.
(610) It's a 2.5, right?
(611) Yeah.
(612) Yeah, so your taxing those little injectors with your big
(613) turbo, it might be running lean on top end.
(614) Just seemed to pull hard through the red
(615) Iine last time I checked.
(616) It could pull harder is all I'm saying.
(617) Anyway, now that it's running...
(618) I need you to go on a parts run.
(619) Where to?
(620) Kendall's.
(621) You buy parts from the competition?
(622) Competition, I'm lucky to be in business.
(623) And, it's too late to drive all the way to Pep Boys.
(624) You're welcome.
(625) Thanks.
(626) Hey.
(627) When you get on it, make sure no one's around.
(628) (engine revving)
(629) Sure there's nothing wrong?
(630) (Mechanic) It's filled up with 116 race gas and
(631) three degrees of timer. This baby's ready to go.
(632) It better be, I'm racing that college punk tonight.
(633) (Kendall) You'll smoke him, son.
(634) You better, if you want to wear that name.
(635) (phone rings)
(636) Hey you. We're still on for 7:30, right?
(637) Ahhh, actually l, I don't think I'm going to make it.
(638) I've got to work late.
(639) Oh.
(640) I'm, I'm sorry, Jess.
(641) Ah, could we do it tomorrow instead?
(642) Yeah, sure.
(643) Thank you, you're awesome. I'll talk to you later, okay?
(644) Bye.
(645) (engines roaring)
(646) (guy) Give it up old man.
(647) (Danny) Hey.
(648) Dude, are you crazy, if Jake and his boys see you,
(649) they're going to rip your throat out.
(650) Relax, I'm just doing some recon.
(651) All right.
(652) Come on Jake, come on Jake, come on Jake, let's go.
(653) Let's go, let's go.
(654) You're about to get schooled, college boy.
(655) Well, it looks like college boy forgot to put down the E brake.
(656) Too bad.
(657) (phone rings)
(658) Hey Rachel.
(659) Ah, I thought you and the newbee were going out tonight?
(660) He had to cancel. He's working late.
(661) Ah no, he's at the races. I'm staring right at him.
(662) He finished [?] before so it's around one twenty.
(663) He's probably running elevens.
(664) Dude, I thought that [?] running elevens at the track,
(665) Jake's got to be running tens.
(666) All right, I'll see you guys later.
(667) All right.
(668) What do we have here?
(669) Don't be shy, Kruger, come and say hello.
(670) Kruger, I'm glad you stopped by.
(671) I think we got off on the wrong foot, you see,
(672) I didn't realize I was in the presence of a celebrity.
(673) I did a little digging and it seems you were a big
(674) man back in L.A. Not that that means much,
(675) when your competition is a bunch of rice rockets.
(676) (all) Ohhhh.
(677) But, your wins did land you a high profile sponsorship,
(678) which surprised me at first.
(679) I was like, this is that loser, Frank Kruger's kid?
(680) (all) Ohhhh.
(681) Shut up, Jake.
(682) And, then I found out you managed to crash your
(683) sponsor's race car a month later.
(684) And I was like, what do you know, he is a Kruger.
(685) (laughter)
(686) And now, everyone's under the impression that you're fast,
(687) maybe even faster than me.
(688) Oohh!
(689) Well, let's set them straight.
(690) You couldn't come close the other night.
(691) I had three people in my car.
(692) I wasn't getting full boost.
(693) Well then, let's settle it right now.
(694) We got a few hours before the bars close,
(695) and you have to scoop your old man off the floor.
(696) That is why you moved here, right,
(697) to be your dad's personal dial-a-ride.
(698) Ohhhh.
(699) Ow!
(700) That was low. That was low, I admit it, I shouldn't
(701) insult your dad, my gardener says he does good work.
(702) You want to race?
(703) Come on, let's go.
(704) Take it easy, Danny. You're not thinking straight.
(705) Looks like Kruger's going down.
(706) Ohh.
(707) All right.
(708) (squealing tires)
(709) Okay.
(710) Here we go.
(711) Come on.
(712) Come on.
(713) No.
(714) Damn it.
(715) That's it.
(716) That's what you get for going Japanese.
(717) I almost had you, and you know it.
(718) Almost doesn't count. Now is a good time to get out
(719) of here before you make a bigger fool out of yourself.
(720) (sirens) Bobo.
(721) Jessica!
(722) Damn it.
(723) I think we lost them.
(724) So how much you beat him by?
(725) Not enough.
(726) I almost had you and you know it.
(727) Almost doesn't count. Now is a good time to
(728) get out of here before you make a bigger fool...
(729) We were bam, blew by him in fourth gear.
(730) Smelling my exhaust.
(731) Kruger, Kendall, follow me.
(732) Make sure the columns match to 871, let's go.
(733) Go.
(734) What the hell were you thinking?
(735) I don't know.
(736) I warned you both to keep it on the track.
(737) Now, I got to call your dads.
(738) Mine practically threw me a party for taking Kruger down.
(739) I'm still going to have a word with him.
(740) Now get your dumb ass back in the class.
(741) You put me in a bad position Danny, you know that?
(742) I really thought you were smarter than this.
(743) What's it going to take?
(744) I'm sorry.
(745) What's it going to take?
(746) Cause I was thinking, ah what the hell, maybe I should let
(747) him race. He's doing his homework, he's showing up on
(748) time, maybe I should cut him some slack.
(749) (crunches paper)
(750) Give me your keys,
(751) nothing but an irresponsible spoiled little punk.
(752) Do no lecture me about responsibility,
(753) you abandoned your wife and kid.
(754) You're seventeen.
(755) You don't know a damned thing about life.
(756) Do you know what it's like to have your dad shut you out?
(757) I was ten.
(758) Yeah? You talk to me when fifteen years of hard
(759) work blow up in your face because of one mistake.
(760) Maybe you should have focused on what you had instead of
(761) obsessing over what you lost.
(762) You know what, that's enough. I'm not going to let
(763) you screw up. Give me your keys, you're done driving.
(764) You're done driving.
(765) You know what I think, I think you're jealous, cause
(766) I've got a real shot at doing something that you never could.
(767) Give me your keys. Give me your keys!
(768) (knocking)
(769) Hi, ah...
(770) is Jessica here?
(771) What do you want, Danny?
(772) I screwed up, but l didn't go there to race.
(773) Then why were you there?
(774) Oh, I needed to see what l was up against in the drags.
(775) Why couldn't you just tell me that?
(776) I don't know.
(777) Back in L.A., I had a sponsorship, a really big one,
(778) and I lost it.
(779) How?
(780) It doesn't matter how.
(781) When I heard about the High School Drags, I thought...
(782) this could be my shot, you know, like my second chance.
(783) So, am I just something to pass the time with
(784) until you get that golden ticket out of here?
(785) No, no, not at all.
(786) Have you ever stopped to think that just maybe
(787) there are more important things than racing?
(788) I came here to apologize to you, why are you
(789) giving me a hard time?
(790) If that's how you feel, then you need to go.
(791) Are you serious?
(792) Now.
(793) (dripping)
(794) (squealing tires)
(795) (crash)
(796) (phone rings)
(797) Yeah?
(798) Dad, I need your help.
(799) Where are you?
(800) Are you okay?
(801) Yeah.
(802) Are you okay?
(803) I'm fine.
(804) Are you sure?
(805) I'm fine.
(806) Oh man. What happened?
(807) Somebody messed with my brakes.
(808) You had to be hauling ass to end up like that.
(809) I'm telling you, somebody screwed with my car.
(810) Always somebody else's fault with you.
(811) You could have gotten yourself killed.
(812) You don't think.
(813) What the hell's wrong with you?
(814) Ohhh.
(815) Help me with the winch.
(816) (dials)
(817) (phone rings)
(818) Hello.
(819) Mom?
(820) Danny?
(821) Can I come home?
(822) Oh, Danny.
(823) If, if I thought this wasn't the best thing for you,
(824) I would come and get you in a heart beat.
(825) (crying)
(826) He hates me, he doesn't want me here, he never wanted me.
(827) No, no, that is not true.
(828) It was his idea for you to go there.
(829) Danny, talk to him. He loves you.
(830) Maybe it's time to forgive him.
(831) Oh, I'm sorry, Mom.
(832) I know.
(833) I love you.
(834) I love you, too.
(835) Why did you leave?
(836) Ah, I fell apart, I ruined everything,
(837) trying to make an impossible path instead of finishing
(838) second and having a family and a career.
(839) Hey...
(840) do you remember the time I came to pick you up from school...
(841) right before l, I took off?
(842) No.
(843) You had a 104-degree fever,
(844) the school nurse called for us to pick you up.
(845) Mom was at work, I didn't have a job because l...
(846) well, when I got there...
(847) they wouldn't release you to me.
(848) I mean it wasn't even 10:30 in the morning,
(849) and I was already half a bottle in.
(850) I don't remember that.
(851) You know what I do remember?
(852) It was the first time you took me for a ride in this beast.
(853) I had butterflies in my stomach the whole time.
(854) That feeling of acceleration was so intense,
(855) I was really scared at first, then I felt safe.
(856) Cause I knew you were behind the wheel.
(857) You know what...
(858) as hard as it is to hear it,
(859) I'm glad I mean it's better that I wasn't there for the last few
(860) years, cause it wasn't pretty and you'd hate me even more.
(861) I didn't hate you. I never hated you.
(862) But, you know, a visit every once in a
(863) while would have been nice.
(864) Yeah, I should have been there.
(865) Thanks. I'll get a ride home from Max.
(866) Hey Kruger, where's your ride?
(867) Working on any new mods?
(868) It's wrecked, you guys.
(869) I'm out.
(870) (school bell)
(871) Where's Fernando?
(872) He's supposed to be up there playing Ben, I need a Ben.
(873) He's in the bathroom.
(874) Are you kidding me?
(875) I'll do it.
(876) Oh.
(877) Huh.
(878) Nice to see you coming around, Danny.
(879) All right, you know what, before you just jump in,
(880) I want you to tell me in your own words, what do
(881) you think that Ben is trying to say to Claire?
(882) Ahhh...
(883) All right, just remember, he's a compulsive gambler
(884) and he just bet everything on the wrong horse,
(885) and now he has to face her.
(886) (Danny) I guess he's... saying he's sorry.
(887) Sorry?
(888) Dan... He just gambled away her wedding ring,
(889) you're going to have to do better than, I'm sorry.
(890) Ahh... he'd say he was stupid,
(891) and that he let his addiction get the best of him.
(892) (Parker) Good. What else?
(893) He'd say he should have listened when she
(894) tried to help him, and he'd say thank you.
(895) You're welcome.
(896) Well, that's a familiar sight, I can't remember
(897) the last time I saw you driving it.
(898) Ah, just thought l'd dust her off and take
(899) my son to school today.
(900) I guess you heard our boys got a little rowdy
(901) the other night, just like we used to, except of course ah,
(902) Kendall won this time.
(903) Heard it was close.
(904) Ah, your boy didn't have much of a chance.
(905) Got half my shop bolted under Jake's V8.
(906) It'd end up lower, next.
(907) (Frank) Uh huh.
(908) It's good for business. When he wins.
(909) All the other kids come in and they spend all their money.
(910) Right.
(911) Hey, you know, l, I'm not really sure that your
(912) boy's got much of a future in racing, but hey...
(913) you can always change the name of that shop to Kruger and Son.
(914) Ah, you know something, Jimmy, it's one thing to understand
(915) how to bolt after market parts to your car...
(916) It's another thing entirely...
(917) to understand how they all work together.
(918) (laughs)
(919) Son of ah...
(920) Hey kid, what's going on?
(921) Remember guys, it's the last day to turn in your permission
(922) slips for the Drag. So, drop them if you got them.
(923) I'm glad you're still in.
(924) You guys want to be part of my pit crew?
(925) Hell, yeah.
(926) We got three days boys, so let's get this front
(927) end stripped, I mean everything.
(928) Could you guys use another pair of hands?
(929) Thank you.
(930) Two fenders, front cross member, radiator supports, two A arms,
(931) inter cooler, motor mounts and the grand total is...
(932) There's no way, it's too much.
(933) All right, it's a school night, everyone go home.
(934) We'll regroup tomorrow.
(935) Hey Randy.
(936) Same to you.
(937) You still got your eyes on my Buick?
(938) (Mark) Frank, wow, long time no see.
(939) Good to see you, Mark.
(940) Yeah, what can I do for you?
(941) Ah, I ah, I really need you to hook me up.
(942) It's for my boy.
(943) Oh wow.
(944) Yeah, he's racing in the high school drags.
(945) You sold the Buick?
(946) Yep.
(947) Should be enough left over for the rest
(948) of the performance stuff.
(949) But, it won you your first trophy.
(950) Time to let go of the past and focus on what's ahead.
(951) Thanks, Dad.
(952) It's the least I could do.
(953) Now, help me unload this stuff.
(954) Right button purges the lines, left button arms the nitrous.
(955) Kendall's got twice the motor and a super charger, you got a
(956) 200 shot right under your thumb, light goes green, hit it.
(957) Hold it down the whole way through.
(958) Yeah, GT40 manifolds.
(959) Is that the best price you can give me?
(960) Rocket fuel.
(961) (engine starts)
(962) (applause)
(963) How's it feel?
(964) Feels good, sounds really good.
(965) I have a little surprise.
(966) Don't ask.
(967) I thought it would be good advertising for the shop.
(968) Yeah, he's thinking about turning this place
(969) into an import shop.
(970) All right, good job guys, we race tomorrow.
(971) (Announcer) Welcome everyone, to the NHRA California
(972) High School Drags. With over 65 student racers from
(973) 32 high schools, this is our biggest event ever.
(974) Leading the pack, is Bradford High School with six entries.
(975) Keep your eyes on hometown favorite, Jake Kendall, and the
(976) whole gang from Kendall Performance Centers.
(977) Newcomer, Danny Kruger has a unique entry this year, fielding
(978) a 2.5-liter, four cylinder, all wheel drive Subaru STl.
(979) It's one of the only four cylinder's in competition,
(980) and it's going head to head with all these big V8s.
(981) Let's see if this little Subaru has what it takes.
(982) We'd like to thank all our sponsors, including Grant
(983) Steering Wheels, Brarer Racing...
(984) You guys get unloaded, I'll get us registered.
(985) You got it.
(986) (announcer) Next up in the warm up round, we have Miguel
(987) Sanchez with his classic turbo diesel truck, Little Red.
(988) 11.22 and 11.41.
(989) I've seen both these cars run quicker, so I don't think
(990) they're giving it all they've got.
(991) You're going down, Kruger.
(992) It runs in the family.
(993) Like father, like son.
(994) Looks like you picked the wrong team, Jess.
(995) Looks like I picked the wrong friend.
(996) (Frank) All right, turn him out. You got to stay focused.
(997) Here.
(998) We're good to go.
(999) Fantastic.
(1000) All right, let's get your ass to the starting line.
(1001) Warm-up round is almost over.
(1002) First run, all you have to do is come under 13 seconds.
(1003) That should be no problem.
(1004) Okay.
(1005) (announcer) This is the last race of the warm-up round and we
(1006) have Danny Kruger and his STl. His opponent is Alex Dodd in
(1007) his retro Ford Mustang from Washington High School.
(1008) Look at that burnout. Dodd is getting those tires nice and
(1009) sticky so he can get maximum traction off the starting line.
(1010) No need to heat up your tires when you got all
(1011) wheel drive like that Subaru.
(1012) Kruger stumbles off the starting line and the Mustang is gone.
(1013) Let's see if Kruger can catch him.
(1014) And, no sir, Alex Dodd comes in first with a 12.29.
(1015) Danny Kruger barely qualifies with a 12.98.
(1016) Ah, it's in the bag.
(1017) Hey.
(1018) I know, I know.
(1019) Come on, man.
(1020) The track is stickier than the street, I wasn't expecting that.
(1021) At least I had a solid track speed.
(1022) Every run, from now on, your time has to drop.
(1023) You should be in the elevens.
(1024) You lost another race, we're out of here, it's over.
(1025) Now, get focused.
(1026) (announcer) Let's cheer on all our racers, as we
(1027) head into round one. Coming up to the line now is
(1028) Grant Warner and his 1969 Oldsmobile 442.
(1029) Grant's been testing all summer, and let me tell you folks,
(1030) those wheelie bars aren't just for looks.
(1031) But, he's going against Jake Kendall, with his
(1032) 2011 Mustang GT. We're kicking things off with two
(1033) of our fastest racers going head to head.
(1034) (cheering)
(1035) Look at Jake give Grant the thumbs down,
(1036) Jake is feeling confident, folks.
(1037) (screeching)
(1038) Ouch folks, seems like Grant pushed his 442 a little too
(1039) hard, and that car's going home on a trailer.
(1040) Jake Kendall wins with a 10.98 and 127 miles per hour.
(1041) Next up, Danny Kruger's STl, versus Kevin Picara
(1042) in his 1970 Chevy Nova.
(1043) Let's see if Danny gets his launch right this time.
(1044) Oh, and a good launch for Danny Kruger as he
(1045) jumps ahead of the Nova.
(1046) And he did it. Danny Kruger advances to the
(1047) next round with an 11.40 and 121 miles per hour.
(1048) That's a solid run from that little 4 cylinder.
(1049) Well, it's hard to miss Andrea Faust in her hot pink Dodge.
(1050) This girl has been racing her whole life,
(1051) and knows how to get the boys a run for their money.
(1052) And, they sure love watching her race.
(1053) Andrea Faust advances to the next round.
(1054) Folks, there is some serious competition and these kids
(1055) are not taking it lightly. Let's see who's got it.
(1056) (Max) Hey, how you doing?
(1057) (Andrea) How are you?
(1058) Good to see you.
(1059) Good to see you. You guys racing?
(1060) No, we're with Danny Kruger.
(1061) He's in the Subaru over there.
(1062) Yeah. Looking good.
(1063) Like a birthday cake.
(1064) (announcer) In the quarter final round we have another
(1065) Kendall performance racer from Bradford High School.
(1066) Clint Johnson in his 1969 Chevy Chevelle, who is up against
(1067) Danny Kruger and his fast and furious 4 bay.
(1068) Clint smokes up his tires as Danny drives
(1069) around the burn out box.
(1070) The winner here advances to the semi-finals.
(1071) (Clint) Come on, come on, come on.
(1072) No, no, no.
(1073) Kruger easily takes it, with an 11.17 to Johnson's 11.88.
(1074) Yes! We did it.
(1075) (announcer) In our first semi-final round, we have
(1076) Andrea Faust in her ground pounding low farb from
(1077) Patriot High School versus Jake Kendall and
(1078) his super charged Mustang from Bradford.
(1079) Jake Kendall advances to the championship final round.
(1080) That's our fastest run of the day.
(1081) For our second semi-final round, we have Miguel Sanchez
(1082) and his Dodge truck versus Kruger and his STl.
(1083) Hi Tom.
(1084) Bill. How are you?
(1085) Carl, Tom Briggs.
(1086) (Carl) How are you?
(1087) I'm good.
(1088) I see three of your students up there.
(1089) That's impressive.
(1090) Any bets who takes it?
(1091) That's all you're going to give me?
(1092) Fluids are good, everything checks out.
(1093) Ready to roll?
(1094) What a moron.
(1095) Hey, that thing's got massive torque,
(1096) he's going to beat you off the start no matter what.
(1097) Don't let that screw with your concentration.
(1098) Focus on maximum traction. You will catch him
(1099) by the end of the quarter. Reel him in.
(1100) (Announcers) Folks, you couldn't ask for a more
(1101) diverse pair of turbo charged.
(1102) Fun, eh?
(1103) Yeah.
(1104) Yeah.
(1105) Oh, Danny Kruger catches him right at the end. Ladies
(1106) and gentlemen, Danny Kruger advances, he just passed him.
(1107) What?
(1108) He did it.
(1109) (applause)
(1110) (announcer) Well, this was unexpected, l can't believe
(1111) that this little Subaru has made it to the championship
(1112) round, but now Kruger has work cut out for him.
(1113) Jake Kendall has posted quicker quarter mile times and
(1114) faster track speed than Danny all day. Danny's really got to
(1115) hope for a miracle, or at least a couple more cylinders.
(1116) What are you doing with that?
(1117) Cranking up the boost, otherwise I don't think
(1118) I can do much better than my last run.
(1119) Danny, what are you doing? Your turbo's maxed out,
(1120) you're going to blow your motor like that out of the
(1121) It's only set a 22 psi, I can still turn it up a bit,
(1122) it might give me enough of an edge.
(1123) You know how you shave a few tenths off your time?
(1124) How?
(1125) Power shift on this one.
(1126) Isn't that just as dangerous?
(1127) No, only if you screw up. Not much point.
(1128) Now, I don't want that Kruger kid showing us up.
(1129) It'll look real bad, you understand me?
(1130) Yes, sir.
(1131) Is it almost ready?
(1132) Yeah, we got the new tires on and the muffler's off.
(1133) You should get a lot more top end.
(1134) But do not rev it too high.
(1135) I'll be fine.
(1136) (announcer) Here we go folks,
(1137) the championship race at the NHRA High School Drag.
(1138) What's power shifting?
(1139) (Frank) It's shifting without lifting off the throttle.
(1140) In turbo cars it keeps the engine in full boost between
(1141) gears for maximum acceleration. You have to be lightning
(1142) fast to do it. There's no room for error, otherwise, boom.
(1143) Go.
(1144) (blows up)
(1145) (explosion)
(1146) Ladies and gentlemen, it is my pleasure to declare
(1147) Danny Kruger the winner of this year's NHRA High School Drag.
(1148) (cheering)
(1149) You got talent, son. See you next summer.
(1150) Thank you.
(1151) Maybe your idea wasn't so bad after all.
(1152) And what's that?
(1153) Turning my place into an import performance shop.
(1154) Hey, hey.
